A Special Place to Buy Sailboats

Compared to most, Maryland has a large and relatively affluent sailboat market with some of the major hotspots including Solomons Island, Deale (South County), Baltimore, the Eastern Shore and of course, Annapolis.

Because of the state's central location, many towns in MD also serve as "bedroom communities" for businesspeople and commuters who travel to Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Philly, Wilmington, and even New York City - all of which are within a day's drive.

What does this mean to the savvy boatbuyer or investor? 

There are exceptions of course, but some people in those areas are too busy making a living to be bothered with selling their boats. In many cases they buy a new one every few years, and they just want the older one gone. These vessels occasionally come onto the market at fire-sale like prices, which also tend to apply downward pressure on other sailboat listings in the area.

There are other factors at work here too, but the long and short of it is that Maryland is one of the best places in the world to buy sailboats for .50 cents on the dollar... or less. > more info

TIP #1: As much as possible, try to not overlook the 'smaller' newspaper publications. Lower advertising rates have a way of attracting the most motivated sellers, which may include trustees, estate sales, donations, non-profit sales, etc. Also, we find that some sellers will place an ad in the town where they live, versus in the town where the boat is actually located.

TIP #2: There's no reason to pay retail or "rack price" for a sailboat. Each boat is an investment and with the use of certain techniques, most vessels can be bought down at the wholesale level.
